Join the Wilson Center and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) on Tuesday, November 13 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm for a public event on the state of democratic governance in Africa and what US and African leaders can learn from recent trends on the continent.  

In recent years, headlines across Africa have highlighted increased coups, contested and uncontested elections, declining voter turnout, and large-scale protest movements. These events have raised questions about democratic decline across the continent. To decipher the trends across Africa and bring context and focus to the broader conversations, the Wilson Center Africa Program and the SSRC’s African Peacebuilding Network and Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program are convening the first event in a series on Trendlines and Transformations in African Democratic Governance.  

This first event features African researchers and thought leaders sharing insights on democratic governance trends across Africa and the emerging opportunities and challenges these trends pose to US-Africa relations. In particular, the conversation will examine how citizen participation and civic engagement demands are shaping governance in different ways across the continent.
