"Heal:" A Film Screening, Art Viewing, and Conversation with Fereshta Kazemi

The Wilson Center's South Asia Institute was pleased to host a screening of Heal, an award-winning short film about community, conflict, and education. The screening of this film, which is directed by Mian Adnan Ahmad, was meant to raise awareness about education and its challenges in Afghanistan.

After the screening, South Asia Institute Director Michael Kugelman was in conversation with Fereshta Kazemi, an Afghan actress who appears in the film. They discussed the significance of Heal, how it relates to contemporary Afghanistan under Taliban rule, and what lessons it may offer for policymakers in Washington and beyond. The conversation was preceded by a screening of All the Fatimas, a conceptual art film of several minutes, created by Kazemi, on girls in Afghanistan. It was used to help spark discussion on the loss of education for Afghan girls and women.

A reception followed, during which attendees viewed a range of Afghan visual art that focuses on Afghan institutions, femininity, and war.
